Nurlu

Yawuru people have always danced and sung their culture in traditional grounds around the town of Broome.

The Nurlu project collects recordings of cultural performances and to brings knowledge back to the Yawuru community.  The project broadens understanding of cultural activity and creates a new generation of performers. In recent years, Nurlu has re-connected with neighbouring cultural groups including Bardi and Karajarri, entrenching connections and revitalising heritage.

Nurlu is shared with the wider community in an inclusive modern celebration and is performed increasingly often at public events such as Naidoc week and during Shinju Matsuri, Broome’s Festival of the Pearl.

Our songs, our dance and our stories are sent to us through bugarri,
enticing us to emanate the power of the country which brings life to all. We embark on a journey that carries the spirit of our people with nurlu.
